As a generation and as a nation we are gaining weight, growing tired, and sleeping less. Diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cancer are all on the rise.  Trends in medicine show that the “baby boomers” – those born between 1946 and 1964—are being haunted by the ominous shadows of increased weight and chronic illness as they reach age 50 and beyond.

There has been an alarming rise in obesity and heart disease in the United States in the last 20 years:

  • Two-thirds of America’s adults are overweight or obese.
  • As many as 30% of U.S. children are overweight.
  • Childhood obesity has more than doubled within the past 25 years.
  • Within the past 20 years, childhood diabetes has increased ten-fold.

We’ve been told over and over that to lose weight, we must eat healthy food and exercise.  Which foods, how much food, when and how to exercise—these parameters vary from person to person and are influenced by the popular diet plan of the moment.  Yet, many of us find ourselves in the repetitive pattern of losing weight and gaining it back.

We may be aware of when and why we overeat or choose to indulge in sweet or salty snacks.  We may know that we eat when we are angry, when our feelings are hurt, when we are bored, when we are happy, to reward ourselves for an achievement, or to console ourselves when we are feeling low.

These are examples of emotional eating. Yet despite all this diet information and self-knowledge, we find ourselves still overweight and struggling to change our eating habits.

Unresolved emotional stresses will shut down the brain, causing weight gain!

The body responds to emotional stress the same way it does to a physical or structural stressor. The brain stimulates the adrenal glands to release a hormone called cortisol, which acts on the liver to break down glycogen into sugar for “fight-or-flight” which in turn triggers the release of insulin.

The insulin brings the sugar into play for action, and if none is needed by the muscles, the sugar goes back to the liver. If not needed there because the liver has reached its maximum capacity for it, it goes to fat storage. High levels of cortisol cause the body to store fat.

The result of sustained high cortisol causes the three primary neurotransmitters to lower in the brain, contributing to weight gain, depression, and fatigue. These are the three most common complaints of all healthcare office visits in North America!

Three primary neurotransmitters typically depleted in weight gain:

  • Serotonin: Depleted levels cause craving of carbohydrates, especially sugars. Low serotonin levels are also associated with depression. Normal levels feel grounded and satisfied.
  • Epinephrine: Depleted levels do not allow the body to burn fat properly. Normal levels allow the body to burn fat effectively, and provide plenty of energy.
  • Nor-epinephrine: Lowered levels are associated with lack of motivation and normal metabolism.  Normal levels have plenty of motivation and drive.

The target area in the brain for successful weight loss is the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus controls the feeling of full and it also controls the stimulation to eat.

Emotional hurts that occurred in our early childhood, that we may not even consciously remember, are responsible for our eating habits today.  We have been wired to react as a child and even now as adults, we impulsively eat not as a person of choice, but because emotionally, we are stuck at our earliest emotional wound.

Book Review — “The Calcium Lie”

What? We’ve been fooled again? Nutritional theories evolve and change over time as science learns more about the human body and its processes. Dr. Robert Thompson offers cutting edge information refuting the commonly held position of the importance of calcium, and lots of it, in our diet. Through his clinical practice, he has determined that an overabundance of calcium creates what he calls “The Calcium Cascade,” a domino-effect of inefficient nutritional depletion that results in multiple metabolic malfunctions, including obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, anxiety, migraines, depression and hypertension.
Bones are not only made of calcium. Calcium is ONE of 12 minerals plus traces of many other minerals that are needed to make strong bones. He believes that we have been mislead by doctors, nutritionists, health care professionals and big pharmaceutical companies in the belief that we need more and more calcium. Is Switching to Organic Foods a Good Move?

When you go to the grocery store, do you drop by the organic food section or walk past it? Do you know what the difference is between the food on the organic aisle and the other aisles? Simply put, organic food is free of chemicals, antibiotics, and growth hormones.  In other words, they are 100% natural.

There are 3 main reasons why people eat organic food. Let’s take a look at what they are.

1. Better Health
For most people, the biggest motivator for switching to organic food is that it’s better for the body and health. Feeding your body with food laden with chemicals and pesticides puts you at a higher risk of developing health problems such as cancer. It is disconcerting to know that eating an average apple means eating about 9 pesticides, and this is after you’ve washed it. With organic food, you can be sure you are not harming your body with such toxic substances. Some say that organic foods contain more nutrition. However, this is still up for debate. A recent study by the Department of Human Nutrition, University of Copenhagen does not support that claim. On the other side of the coin, a US study by the Organic Centre found organic food to have 25% higher nutrient levels as compared to conventional food.

2. Better Environment
Organic farmers do not utilize chemical fertilizers and pesticides to increase their yield. Instead, they use eco-friendly methods such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control. Organic farming may not produce as much yield as conventional farming but it contributes to soil and water conservation as well as reducing pollution. Certain pesticides and chemical fertilizers can damage the soil and nearby surroundings. By choosing to eat organic food, you are indirectly doing a small part in protecting the environment.

3. It Tastes Better
Does organic food really taste better? The difference in taste is more pronounced in certain foods, not all. Many people have commented that food such as chicken, bananas, strawberries, celery, milk and carrots does taste better when they are organic.

According to a Harris poll dated October 2007, a majority of people believe organic food benefits the environment and health. However, the percentage of Americans buying organic food “all or most of the time” is only 7%. Approximately 30% buy organic food occasionally. Why is that? Organic food may have its benefits, but not many are willing to pay twice or three times more for it. The good news is that there are ways to avoid blowing your budget when buying organic food:
– Buy in clubs or co-ops
– Buy directly from farmers
– Buy in bulk
– Buy store brands instead of name brands
– Plant your own organic garden
– Buy in season
– Don’t have to switch over to organic food 100%. The following fruits and vegetables are listed by Environmental Working Group (EWG) as the top 12 most contaminated: peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, kale, lettuce, imported grapes, carrots and pears. So give priority to these foods.

So, is switching to organic food a good move? Yes!  If you think so, too, then don’t hesitate to make the switch. It may be pricier, but there are ways to keep the expenditures down.

6 Nutritional Keys in Treating Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Fibromyalgia was recognized by the American Medical Association as an illness and cause of disability in 1987, yet fibromyalgia continues to be difficult to diagnose and treat.

Today with the aid and resources of the internet, along with a network of educated and supportive friends, patients can now be proactive in their diagnostic approach and treatment methods.  Changing one’s diet and reducing the chemical stressors on the body that come from eating inappropriate food have been found to be tremendously helpful in relieving the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia.

To most effectively benefit, each person needs to experiment to see what works best for their body. The results will vary for each individual. The following tips are a great starting point for easing symptoms and taking control of fibromyalgia:

  • Balancing your diet will allow your body to heal and move towards its optimal state.  The best way to do this is to avoid foods that contain saturated fats (including ALL junk foods) and to increase the intake of fruits and vegetables.  The daily consumption of water is instrumental in the flushing out of your system.  These simple changes will allow your body to have a healthy foundation of nutritional support.
  • It is important to make sure your diet consists of large amounts of lean protein and fewer carbohydrates.  Lean protein (skinless chicken, lean beef and fish) is one of the best ways to fuel your body by keeping your energy levels high and eliminating hypoglycemia. Carbohydrates in small quantities are necessary for the body’s production of insulin, however in excess amounts they contribute to your system storing fat.
  • Maintaining good health means avoiding all products that have caffeine in them (coffee, tea, chocolate).  This is crucial because caffeine is a diuretic and can exacerbate the IBS symptoms often associated with those suffering from fibromyalgia.
  • It has been noted that wheat/gluten and dairy products are important items to eliminate in your diet.  You may feel much better after eliminating these items as they are common culprits that intensify symptoms.
  • Eliminate alcohol.  The combination of pharmaceuticals and alcohol can lead to many unhealthy side effects and in turn make symptoms increasingly worse.  Some of the prominent issues with alcohol consumption are the increase of stomach, digestive tract, and bowel problems.
  • In order to maintain a healthy immune system, you need to reduce or eliminate refined sugars in your diet.  By doing so, tests have shown that patients will experience optimal sleep patterns and fewer and less severe symptoms.

Positive Results

The reduction of chemical stress on the body can have an overwhelming positive result in managing and reducing the symptoms of fibromyalgia.  Altering your diet will not only reduce symptoms, it will allow you to have a better quality of life and be on your way to a healthier and happier tomorrow!
