Trauma

Our physical bodies out-picture all our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and identities.  When these feelings are acknowledged and processed, our mind-body system functions properly.  However, when they get stuck in our bodies, physical dis-ease may occur.  Patients in my holistic chiropractic office often present with muscle tension, fatigue, insomnia, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome or chronic pain. Often, these conditions are the result of past TRAUMA experienced by the patient.

What is trauma?  In my practice, trauma is an emotional insult that creates a charge in the nervous system. It is a one-time or repeated stress that gets lodged in the body and disrupts the flow of energy in the Triad of Health.  The greater the repetition of the event, the deeper is the charge.

Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety, yet any situation that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and alone can be traumatic, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. It’s not the objective facts that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your subjective emotional experience of the event. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized.

 

An event will most likely lead to emotional trauma if:

• It happened unexpectedly.

• You were unprepared for it.

• You felt powerless to prevent it.

• It happened repeatedly.

• Someone was intentionally cruel.

• It happened in childhood.

For example, let’s say that as a child at the dinner table, you spilled your milk and your father yelled at you.  In time, you develop an allergy to milk, a result of this unexpected event.

Experiencing trauma in childhood can have a severe and long-lasting effect. Adverse experiences in childhood generate strong emotions in children. Children who have been traumatized see the world as a frightening and dangerous place. When childhood trauma is not resolved, this fundamental sense of fear and helplessness carries over into adulthood, setting the stage for further trauma.

The cause of the trauma is not always obvious. Here are some commonly overlooked causes of emotional and psychological trauma:

• Falls or sports injuries

• Surgery (especially in the first 3 years of life)

• The sudden death of someone close

• A car accident

• The breakup of a significant relationship

• A humiliating or deeply disappointing experience

• The discovery of a life-threatening illness or

disabling condition

Trauma disrupts the body’s natural equilibrium, freezing us in a state of hyper-arousal and fear. In essence, our nervous system gets stuck in overdrive.  Our innate fight-or-flight system can be overworked from ongoing, relentless stress.  This is especially true when trauma occurs in the early stages of life.  Persistent stress can trigger diabetes, heart disease, obesity, depression, and addiction later on.

Can Weight Loss Be Toxic to Your Health?

Many of the clients I see in my holistic chiropractic practice are eager to lose the extra pounds that they have accumulated in life up until now. Losing weight provides many health benefits, such as lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and reduced risk of conditions such as heart disease, stroke and osteoarthritis. Weight loss can also have a side effect not commonly considered—toxin release.

What is a toxin? Simply defined, a toxin is a substance that your body cannot use and that can cause you harm. Where do they come from? Toxins surround us! They are present in food, water, household products, cosmetics and air pollution. Your body even produces its own toxins during everyday healthy metabolic processes such as hormone production and digestion.

 

Where do these toxins go? Ideally, the body readily processes and eliminates them. If the body can’t keep up with the elimination of these toxins, it must somehow buffer us from them to keep us alive and functioning.

 

When the body is exposed to toxins that it cannot eliminate, it stores them. Most toxins are fat-soluble and our body stores the toxins in body fat to keep them from damaging our brain and nerves. When fat is broken down for energy, as occurs with a weight loss program, the toxins go into the bloodstream.

 

If the toxins are not eliminated upon release from the fat cells they can do damage in the body and potentially contribute to a multitude of symptoms and chronic diseases. The body is, in a sense, being poisoned by weight loss!

 

This is also a reason why people cannot lose weight or hit a plateau while losing weight – the body reaches a point where it cannot lose any more body fat because it is using the fat to protect us from the dangerous effects of these toxins.

 

Does this mean that we should give up on trying to lose fat? Absolutely not! It is a warning. Be careful how you go about losing your weight.

 

One factor that increases your chances of poisoning from weight loss is rapidity. The faster the fat is broken down, the greater the spike in toxins in the blood, which your liver will have to deal with. Everyone wants instant gratification. We want to see huge weight loss in a short period of time. This is not healthy.

 

Nutritionally inadequate weight loss diets commonly leave the body ill-equipped to cope with the surge of toxic chemicals released from fat storage. Detoxification can cause side effects such as headaches, nausea and fatigue.

 

Quality nutritional supplements such as the ones I offer my weight loss clients minimize or eliminate these side effects. The weight loss protocol I recommend is not difficult to follow and allows unlimited soup, salad and vegetables for 7 to 21 days, in addition to a special shake to drink. As the weight is released, my clients report feeling less stressed and having a greater sense of well being.

Should You Choose “Gluten-Free”?

We’ve been hearing about gluten more and more these days. Your grocery store may even have a “gluten-free” section of food items. Often clients in my holistic chiropractic practice wonder if gluten could be the cause of their symptoms. This month, I’d like to bring you up-to-date on what science knows about gluten and its role in celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity and the gluten-free diet.

 

Gluten is not a protein itself but rather a protein composite that is found in the grass-like grains of wheat, rye, barley spelt, kamut and triticale. Oats also contain gluten and certified gluten-free oats are available.

The first health condition discovered to be caused by exposure to gluten was celiac disease. This is an autoimmune attack on the small intestine. Common symptoms include abdominal pain and cramping, and alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation.

 

By damaging the intestinal lining, gluten can result in maldigestion and malabsorption of nutrients. A blood test is required to properly diagnose celiac disease. Gluten can also travel through the body and damage other organs. Almost any chronic health condition you can think of has been associated with gluten sensitivity, including aching joints, stress and anxiety.

 

There are several ways that gluten can produce adverse health effects. In sensitive individuals, the immune system produces antibodies against gluten. This causes inflammation and attack on various organs. What is the organ most commonly affected by gluten? The brain is the organ most damaged from gluten sensitivity. From headaches to dementia, from seizures to schizophrenia, including learning disorders and developmental delay, gluten sensitivity can be a major factor.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity is another condition that may result from eating foods with gluten. Individuals who suffer from non-celiac gluten sensitivity suffer very similarly to people with celiac disease, but tests for that disease are negative. Through my holistic modalities, I am able to pinpoint gluten sensitivity and address it immediately.

 

Celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity are both treated with a gluten-free diet. Gluten avoidance is not an easy undertaking, yet can be life changing. Those with celiac disease need to practice lifelong gluten avoidance. Whether people with non-celiac gluten sensitivity can ever go back to eating gluten is not clear at this time.

Nor does a gluten-free diet aid weight loss, experts say. Unless your body is reacting negatively to gluten, eating gluten-free food will not help you lose weight. Eating gluten- free can cause deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, magnesium, fiber, and other nutrients because people are avoiding breads, cereals, and grains that are fortified.

 

In contrast, many gluten-free products are not fortified. Be careful when choosing from the growing number of gluten-free products on the market shelves. They’re typically higher in carbohydrates, fat, and sodium, and lower in fiber. Instead, people can bake healthier bread at home that’s higher in fiber and protein and made with gluten-free grains that have been certified to be uncontaminated and gluten-free, such as quinoa, amaranth, or millet.

Beyond Diet and Exercise (or Other Reasons Your Weight May be Sticking Around!)

Guess what? There is more to losing weight than a healthy diet and regular exercise!

 

Many of the patients I see in my holistic chiropractic practice are making good food choices, moving their bodies, reducing their stress and are willing to do the work digging into the emotional reasons behind their eating habits. Yet, some are still not losing weight as fast as they would like.

 

If you’ve been stuck on a weight-loss plateau, read on. This month I want to tell you about six other causes that can slow down weight loss.

1. Lack of Sleep

Not enough sleep can have a negative impact on your weight loss by altering levels of hormones that regulate hunger. In one study at the University of Chicago, people who slept only four hours a night had an 18% reduction in the hormone leptin that signals your brain it has had enough food and a 28% increase in ghrelin, the hormone that tells your brain you are hungry! Plus, after such little sleep, the participants craved sugar, salty and starchy food and had a 24% increase in their appetite for candy, chips and pasta.

2. Sitting too Much

If you spend too much time sitting during your day, you could be packing on the pounds. It isn’t simply the lack of exercise. Even those who exercise regularly may experience this phenomenon. Sitting stops the circulation of lipase, an enzyme that absorbs fats. When you sit, instead of being absorbed by your muscles, the fat recirculates in your blood stream where it may end up being stored as body fat!

 

Sitting not only has a negative effect on fat and cholesterol metabolism, but also stimulates disease-promoting processes. Standing and moving slightly will re-engage the enzymes. So remember to stand rather than sit as often as you can!

3. Depression

Depression and being overweight often go hand-in-hand. People who are depressed are more likely to become overweight and those who are overweight are more likely to become depressed. Depression increases the risk of obesity by 58% according to a recent study by Dutch researchers. It is common for people with depression to overeat, especially “comfort” foods that may be high in fat and sugar.

4. Medications

Certain prescription drugs may have the side effect of weight gain. They include corticosteroids, antidepressants, epilepsy drugs, and drugs used to treat schizophrenia. Also birth control pills, diabetes drugs, and blood pressure drugs may cause weight gain.

5. Portion Sizes

You may be watching the types of food you eat and making better choices, yet if your portion sizes are too large, you won’t be losing the pounds. Portion sizes in the United States have been growing larger over the past decades. For example, in 1970 a bagel weighed three ounces and contained 230 calories. Today, the average bagel is about six ounces and 550 calories! I recently attended a seminar locally in which some of the participants were from Canada and they were all commenting on the size of the portions they received in the restaurant here!

6. Obesity as a Symptom

If you feel you are doing everything you can to lose weight and are still not getting anywhere, it could be a red flag that there is another underlying health problem. The following conditions could be the cause: thyroid disorders, diabetes, lupus, cancer, congestive heart failure, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and metabolic syndrome. See your health care professional to determine if one of these conditions may be involved.

Stop Your Sugar and Food Cravings Naturally!

I recently made the acquaintance of a Registered Nutritional Consulting Practitioner (RNCP) named Nancy DesJardins.  I was so impressed by her research, and her passion to help people overcome their food addictions and reclaim their health, that I wanted to share it with you.  Here is a short article she wrote on sugar:

Sugar. Even the word sounds sweet.

Did you know that by some experts’ count, we are all eating the equivalent of 160 pounds of sugar each year?  And that sugar is one of the worst ingredients – some say poison – you can put into your body?

If you crave chocolate, or cake, or any other sweet stuff, the fact is, like most people, you’re probably addicted to sugar. Of all bad habits, it’s one of the worst. In fact, this is one bad habit that can poison your entire life.

But you can change that. Because like smoking, you can break bad habits – and addictions. The choice is yours.

Step 1: You Decide

The first step, then, is choosing to trade your bad habits for good ones. Out with the bad, sugary foods, and in with the healthy. It’s as easy as that! With this one step, you can change your entire future.

Step 2:  Look Around

Once you’ve made up your mind, the next step is to look around and evaluate the foods you’re putting into your body. Why are you eating them? Are you getting any nutrition from them? There’s a lot of  learning and taking stock ahead. This won’t be easy.

Changing your beliefs and attitudes about yourself and your eating is one of the most difficult challenges you will ever face. But it can be done with good old-fashioned stick-to-it determination, effort, and education. Many people just like you have kicked the sugar habit. I know it can be done – I’ve helped people do it. Not only did they get a new outlook on life, they lost weight in the process!

Recipe for Success

If you are to be successful at breaking the sugar habit, then it’s important to understand how sugar affects your body. And how healthy food – your new, good habit – can give your body the nutrients it craves. Once you learn that, you will never again want to put poison into your body.

A Holistic Chiropractor Takes a Look at Sugar…and YOU!

“Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at suppertime…” 

The lyrics of this song from a bygone era address the sweetness of love. However, in today’s modern world, the sugar we consume at meals is very real and very addictive!

Most people are not aware that they are addicted to sugar. Yet, try to go a few days without it and you will briefly experience the pangs of withdrawal. Most of the clients I see in my holistic chiropractic practice know that too much sugar is not good for their bodies and their health.

 

Sugar leads to excess weight gain and puts you on the path to Type II diabetes. Although you most likely won’t be able to eliminate sugar from your diet completely, I offer here a few tips to reduce your sugar intake.

 

Plenty of people eat sugary foods throughout the day because their bodies tell them that they are hungry. One of the best ways to combat this feeling is to drink plenty of water. In addition to staying hydrated, you will not feel as hungry.

 

 

It is very common for people to eat all sorts of foods without bothering to read the list of ingredients. If you are trying to overcome your addiction to sugar, then make label-reading a habit. If sugar is one of the first three ingredients, don’t buy it.

 

The type of food that you eat is very important. Eat foods that are as close to their original form as possible. For example, instead of eating canned peaches in syrup, eat a whole fresh peach. Eat organic oatmeal for breakfast instead of packaged cereal, which usually has added sugar.

 

In my book, The Healing Code of Weight Loss, I recommend the following:

 

Avoid large beverages such as “super-sized” sugar-sweetened soft drinks. They have a large number of calories. Instead, try drinking water with a slice of lemon. If you want to drink soda, choose a calorie-free beverage or fruit juices instead.

 

Eat a breakfast that contains protein and fat to keep sugars low. This will help stave off cravings for chocolate and starches. Protein takes longer than sugar for your body to digest. You will feel full for a longer period of time and be less inclined to reach out for a sweet snack.

 

Stay away from fast food. The high sugar and fat content of fast food, combined with lack of exercise, creates a chain of events that puts the body into chemical stress. The digestive system is down-regulated when the body is under stress and one of the symptoms is belly fat.

 

Keep an accurate journal of everything that you eat. You may be surprised at how your sugar intake adds up when all of the foods you eat are combined. Keeping a journal will allow you to see exactly how much you consume.

 

You will also help yourself by staying as active as possible. People tend to eat more often when they are sitting around relaxing or watching TV. Starting an exercise regimen is a great idea since it helps you get or stay in shape. In addition, when you are physically active, you will be too busy to reach for the sugary foods!

Control Your Stress and Stay Healthy!

Your body can adapt to stress quite nicely, yet there are times when the body goes into a “flight or fight” response when stress occurs.

 

Imagine you are hiking through the words and suddenly you see a bear! Here are the changes that occur in your physical body as it prepares to fight or flee from the bear:

 

Your blood is redirected from your extremities (giving you cold hands and feet), from your face (creating a pale look) and from your digestive system to the large muscles to help you run or fight. Your pupils enlarge to help you see better and your hearing becomes sharper. Your breathing and heart rate increase, and your blood pressure rises. The adrenal glands secrete adrenalin and other hormones to create a heightened state of arousal. Glucose and oxygen are increased to the heart, brain and skeletal system for more energy.

 

Once the brain perceives that the threat is over, the body reverses this reaction to return to a more calm state. Blood goes back to the extremities and digestive system; heart rate, breathing and blood pressure go back to normal, etc.

 

Of course, this bear in the woods situation is not a regular occurrence here in Ventura, California! However, we humans may experience mini stress responses like this on a chronic basis. This consistent physical reaction can lead to health problems such as heart disease, heart attacks, insomnia, high blood pressure, low energy, anxiety, weight loss or gain, and depression. Experts say that chronic stress can affect the immune system, which can lead to frequent colds and flu.

 

The body reacts just like the extreme physical response described above,but on a lesser scale when continual stress is experienced. These consistent mini-reactions can wear the body down and take years off our lives. In my practice as a holistic chiropractor, I see patients whose lives are being chipped away by chronic stress.

What can we do about the little annoyances of life that haunt us every day? Deep relaxation exercises can save us from the turmoil of stress. There are many relaxation techniques that you can do on a daily basis to help you lead a more stress-free life. I suggest you search the Internet or purchase a book or DVD on relaxation techniques, find something that feels good to you and do it regularly.

 

Breathing techniques work wonders. They can slow the brain waves down and help you think more clearly. Many people breathe too shallowly into their lungs. Practicing abdominal breathing encourages better oxygenation of the body. One breathing technique I do regularly is the following:

 

Lie or sit down and put your hands on your abdomen. Breathe in deeply and feel your abdomen rise. If you feel your chest rise instead, breathe in more deeply until you feel your hands rise on your abdomen. Once you have achieved this pattern, do a few minutes of abdominal breathing. Breathe in SLOWLY through your nose for the count of four. Hold your breath for the count of four and then breathe out through pursed lips (as if you are going to whistle) SLOWLY for the count of six.

 

Do this for five to ten minutes twice a day. This will definitely relax you!

 

There are many other relaxation techniques you can try such as meditation, progressive relaxation, imagery, etc. Exercise is a great stress reliever and is a must! Exercise produces endorphins, a source of pleasure. It can help to lower blood pressure as well.

 

Watch your self-talk. This is the talk that goes on in your mind all day long. Be more understanding and forgiving of the little irritations or people who frustrate you. They may have just had a fight with their spouse or heard some bad news and are struggling with their emotions. Be positive and stop any negative thoughts in their tracks.

Get out with friends so you have balance in your life. Laugh, laugh, laugh. Watch funny videos. Laughter is great for your health!

 

Talk out or write down things that bother you, don’t keep them bottled up inside. Stress can kill, so if you feel like you just can’t cope, please seek medical help!

 

Enjoy life, as it is too short to get ourselves all tangled up in anger and frustration. Practice relaxation methods and you will see a huge difference in your life. Be happy!

Tune Up Your Body’s Filter For the New Year!

We all have regular maintenance duties to attend to in our life.  The car needs a new oil filter, the air conditioner filter needs to be changed, we clean the lint filter on the clothes dryer. This year, clean your body’s filter, the liver, with a detoxification diet.  I’m encouraging all my clients and their families to experience the healthful results of a 10 to 14 day cleanse at the beginning of the new year. I do it myself and highly recommend its benefits!

 

Cleansing diets, or detoxification diets, have become more widely known in the last few years. They are considered detox diets because they are reported to remove toxins or poisons from the body that have purportedly built up due to years of unhealthy eating or exposure to pollution and other toxic chemicals in everyday life.

As a holistic chiropractor, when I see in my practice a patient whose stress levels are off the charts, I often recommend that we start addressing those conditions with a 10-day detox protocol to help return the body systems to an even balance.

 

One very popular result of cleansing diets is that they help people lose weight. This is most likely due to a combination of factors.  During a cleansing diet, there is quite often a release of waste from the colon. This waste may have been impacted or lodged there for some time and its elimination shows up as a weight loss!

 

Another factor that causes weight loss during a cleansing diet is that the person doing the cleanse has changed their diet to one that contains more fresh fruits and vegetables. When raw fruits and vegetables are the bulk of a person’s diet, rapid weight loss often occurs. Fruits and vegetables are full of fiber and many also have low calories and a high water content. This helps the person doing the cleanse to feel full, eat less, and feel satisfied.
Besides weight loss, some other great results that have been reported after doing a cleansing diet are:

 

Overall health improvement – less achiness in joints and bones, better and more restful sleep at night, and more clear thinking (not foggy or clouded)

Dissipation of mild depression – For many, a cleansing diet has been found to restore a zest for living!

Younger looking body, skin, and face – A nice side effect many people enjoy after a cleansing diet is that their skin has a new refreshing glow.  Their appearance may be more rested, rather than previously haggard or drawn.

A cleansing diet can be a great way to rejuvenate your body and have more energy. It gives your body a clean slate on which to build a more healthy way of life. Even if you’re not ready to commit to a cleansing diet, simply adding more raw fruits and vegetables to your daily diet will flood your body with pure nutrition. Your body loves to get “real food” to eat each day. So give it a whole fresh food treat often!

In addition to all the vegetables you want, the detoxification diet that I recommend (and what gives the cleanse its “punch”!) includes a shake that you drink three times a day, one with each meal. Weight Loss and Diabetes

This month, I’d like to address a health challenge that I am seeing more often in my practice: the client who is overweight and has insulin dependent diabetes.

 

“No matter how heavy you are, you will significantly lower your blood sugar if you lose some weight,” says Cathy Nonas, MS, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association and a professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. “We know it’s true — that if someone with diabetes loses 5% to 10% of their weight, they will significantly reduce their blood sugar. We see it all the time: people can get off their insulin and their medication,” she says. “It’s wonderful. It shows you how interwoven obesity and diabetes are.”

 

Even losing 10 or 15 pounds has health benefits, says the American Diabetes Association. It can:

  • Lower blood sugar
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Improve cholesterol levels
  • Lighten the stress on hips, knees, ankles, and feet

Plus, you’ll probably have more energy, get around easier, and breathe easier.

 

We often assume weight loss is good and healthy. A slow steady intentional weight loss using nutritional change and exercise is associated with beneficial effects on the heart, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. In addition, for a person with insulin dependent diabetes, weight loss can reduce “insulin resistance” and make muscles and fat tissues more sensitive to circulating insulin levels in the blood.  Furthermore, insulin is a hormone that likes to store fat!

 

A reduction in insulin resistance is important because insulin is needed to help glucose (a sugar) enter these tissues to be metabolized. If these tissues are resistant to insulin, higher than normal levels of insulin are needed for this process to occur. As a result, a vicious cycle occurs: the higher the insulin levels are, the harder it is to lose weight; the heavier a person is, the more likely they are to have higher insulin levels. As you can see, the cycle is often hard to break.

On a Diabetes Weight Loss Plan, Watch for Changes in Blood Sugar

 

Cutting back on just one meal can affect the delicate balance of blood sugar, insulin, and medication in your body. So it’s important to work with an expert when you diet. “For anyone, losing weight is challenging enough,” says Dr. Luigi Meneghini, director of the Kosnow Diabetes Treatment Center at the University of Miami School of Medicine. “For people who inject insulin, it’s even more difficult because they have to eat when they have low blood sugar. When you have to reduce calorie intake, prevent overmedication, and eat to correct your low blood sugar, it’s very challenging.” Indeed, both low and high blood sugar levels are the two big concerns for people with diabetes.

Parasympathetic Nervous System Dominance

In my last post we discussed the Sympathetic Nervous System, and the way it affects the body.  This time, we are going to explore the other part of our nervous system, the Parasympathetic, and discuss the interaction between the two.

Your body is more than blood and bones and muscle.  It is an elegant system that also includes glands and organs and is designed to work with perfect circulation, perfect assimilation and perfect elimination.  Yet, I see patients daily for whom this “perfection” is only a pipe-dream.  Sometimes, the culprit that is responsible for a body that is not functioning properly is the nervous system.

The parasympathetic nervous system works to nourish, heal and regenerate the body.  It is anabolic, which means it is concerned with rebuilding the body.  Its nerves stimulate digestion, and the immune and eliminative organs.  These organs include the liver, pancreas, stomach and intestines.  The parasympathetic nervous system, when activated by rest, relaxation and happy thoughts, is essential for balanced living and for all healing.

The sympathetic nervous system activates the glands and organs that defend the body against attack.  It is called the fight-or-flight system.  Its nerves direct more blood to the muscles and the brain.

The heart rate and blood pressure increase, while it decreases the blood flow to the digestive and eliminative organs.  It also activates the thyroid and adrenal glands to provide extra energy for fighting or running away.  Nervousness, stress or feelings of panic are what one feels when in a sympathetic state of readiness.  The sympathetic system is catabolic, which means it tears down the body.  Energy is used to prepare for defense, rather than for nourishment or for elimination of wastes.

The feeling often associated with the parasympathetic state can be one of lethargy or fatigue, as one is so relaxed.  This is not unhealthy.  Rather, it indicates a state of repair and rebuilding in progress.

Symptoms of parasympathetic nervous system dominance often include feeling depressed and cynical.  An individual may be paralyzed by their fear or anger about their situation.  There may be a decrease in clarity of thought as a part of a numbing process to avoid pain and overwhelming emotions.

When a patient arrives at my office in parasympathetic dominance, I often see a person who tends to be more fatigued and prone to depression and whose adrenal and thyroid glands tend to be underactive. They may experience multiple allergies. Other symptoms include weight gain, dizziness and light headedness, low blood pressure and diarrhea.

Many of my patients have already gone from doctor to doctor looking for a cure before they come to my office.  In my many years as a holistic chiropractor, I have studied and practiced effective procedures and techniques, along with nutritional supplements, that balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

When the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are working as they should, the tendency is to rest often and easily. The parasympathetic system reduces the activity of the brain, the muscles, and the adrenal and thyroid glands.  When no situation is pressing, the balanced person can comfortably choose to rest and can sleep deeply. In this restorative sleep, the parasympathetic system renews and heals any damage to the body caused by an over-active sympathetic nervous system.  Balance between the two systems is a key step toward greater health and wellness!
